Start here: do you need an eSIM?

US visitors: check whether your carrier covers Puerto Rico as domestic before buying. T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon typically do. If your plan includes Puerto Rico domestically, any eSIM you buy is redundant spending. Only proceed if your US plan does not include Puerto Rico or charges extra there, or if you are visiting from outside the United States.

The most common mistake for Puerto Rico

Buying a travel eSIM when your US carrier plan already covers Puerto Rico domestically. Check first. Two minutes of account review can save you the cost of an eSIM you did not need.

Selection criteria for international visitors

For international visitors who do need a Puerto Rico eSIM, the selection criteria are different from most Caribbean islands because coverage is excellent across the island on all three networks. Network choice barely matters here; price and features matter more.

CriterionWhy it matters for Puerto RicoHow to check
Price per gigabyteWide brand gaps on identical networks. Puerto Rico's US infrastructure means all plans deliver the same quality.Divide price by gigabytes.
Top-up availabilityBeing able to add data in seconds is more useful than overbuying.Check the provider's app or page.
Validity windowA 7-day plan for a 14-day trip means buying twice.Match validity to trip duration.
Tethering allowedEssential for remote workers; some plans block it.Check the fair-use policy.
Network choiceLess critical here than elsewhere. All three networks are strong.A multi-network plan is a sensible default but not essential.

What the market charges

Plan sizeBudget endMid-marketPremium brands
5 GB / 15 days$6 to $9$10 to $15$19 to $30
10 GB / 30 days$9 to $14$15 to $23$30 to $47
20 GB / 30 days$15 to $23$24 to $35$47 to $70

Marketing claims to ignore

  • Best Caribbean coverage. All Puerto Rico eSIMs use the same US-standard infrastructure. Coverage differences between plans are negligible.
  • Lightning 5G speeds. Puerto Rico does have 5G and it is genuinely fast, but all plans access the same 5G towers.
  • Instant activation. Standard feature. Means nothing about quality.

Where we land

For US visitors: check your carrier first and likely skip the eSIM entirely. For international visitors: any reputable mid-market eSIM works well in Puerto Rico given the excellent coverage. Focus on price per gigabyte, top-up availability and validity. Our Puerto Rico plans are priced at mid-market, ride the strongest available network, with top-up in seconds. We think they are good value for international visitors. And if your US plan already covers you, do not buy one.
