The honest daily numbers

Start from what apps actually consume. The activities that dominate a travel day, maps, messaging, browsing and social media, are remarkably light. The activities that burn data, streaming video and tethering a laptop, are the exception for most trips rather than the rule.

ActivityRough data useNotes
Maps and navigationVery lowAround 5 MB per hour of active navigation. Negligible over a trip.
Messaging (WhatsApp)Very lowTiny, even with photos. Voice and video calls use more.
Social media browsingModerateRoughly 100 to 200 MB per hour, more if it autoplays video.
Music streamingModerateAbout 50 to 100 MB per hour at standard quality.
Video streamingHigh1 to 3 GB per hour depending on resolution. The biggest consumer.
Video callsHighAround 0.5 to 1.5 GB per hour. Add up fast for remote workers.
Laptop tetheringVariableDepends entirely on the work. Can dwarf phone usage.
The rule of thumb

For normal travel use, plan on roughly 0.7 to 1 GB per day. That comfortably covers maps all day, constant messaging, regular social media and some music, with headroom. A beach or resort trip often comes in under this, because the days are spent on the sand and accommodation wifi covers the evenings.

Data by trip type

3 to 5 GBA week or two of beach and resort time, with accommodation wifi at night.
5 to 10 GBA more active trip exploring the island, with daily posting and video calls.
10 to 20 GBA month of regular travel without heavy tethering.
20 GB+A working month: daily video calls, laptop tethering and uploads. Confirm tethering.

Profiles in detail

The resort trip. A week or two based in Port of Spain, the west of Trinidad and Tobago's resort areas, on the beach by day, using the eSIM for browsing, excursions and town, with accommodation wifi for the evenings. This uses little data, often 3 to 5 GB.

The active explorer. A week or two combining the main areas with excursions and day trips, with daily posting and video calls home. 5 to 10 GB fits well.

The long traveler. A month moving around the island, heavy on maps and messaging, accommodation wifi at night. 10 to 20 GB depending on mobile versus wifi use. Top-up matters here.

The remote worker. Based in Trinidad and Tobago for a month, with daily video calls, laptop tethering and uploads. The only profile that genuinely needs 20 GB or more. Confirm tethering is allowed and top-up is available.

The top-up strategy

The smartest approach for most travelers is to buy for the lower end of your estimate and top up once if you need more. Topping up takes seconds and costs less, in money and waste, than buying a large pack on day one and finishing with gigabytes unused.

The offline-stretch effect on your budget

One factor specific to Trinidad and Tobago is worth building into your estimate: any time spent in the the remote northeast coast of Trinidad, parts of the Tobago interior, and offshore dive sites uses little or no data, because there is little or no signal there. If your itinerary includes a boat trip, a remote beach, or time in the quieter areas, those days contribute almost nothing to your usage. This means you can often size your plan to your connected days rather than your total trip length, and a trip that looks like it needs a large plan on paper may comfortably fit a smaller one once the offline stretches are accounted for. It is another reason to buy modestly and top up rather than overbuy.

What inflates usage without you noticing

  • Autoplaying video in social feeds. Turn off autoplay on mobile data to cut social usage sharply.
  • Automatic cloud photo backup over mobile data. With all the photos you will take, set backup to wifi-only.
  • App and system updates. Restrict these to wifi so a large update does not consume a chunk of your plan.
  • Streaming on mobile out of habit. Save movies and music for accommodation wifi in the evening.

Where we land

For most Trinidad and Tobago trips, 5 GB is the right zone, often with room to spare, with top-up as the pressure valve. Buy toward the lower end of your honest estimate, keep heavy tasks on wifi, and top up once if you run short. Only remote workers and heavy streamers should size up to 20 GB or more from the start. Our Trinidad and Tobago plans are sized across this range with top-up available.
