Country snapshot

What matters before buying

Market note

Vivo offers the widest network with the best national reach and broad 5G.

Coverage reality

Brazil has broad 4G and a fast expanding 5G network across Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Salvador and the main cities. Vivo and Claro carry the widest coverage, including most of the coastline and the populated southeast. The realistic weak spots are the Amazon interior, the Pantanal wetlands and the vast rural distances of the centre-west and north, where signal disappears between towns. For the cities, the coast and the main tourist routes, connectivity is dependable.

Local SIM reality

Typical local SIM: $10-25. Usually sold at operator stores, lottery and convenience shops, and supermarkets; airport counters at Sao Paulo and Rio. Brazilian SIMs require a CPF (local tax ID), which most tourists do not have, making local prepaid SIMs awkward to buy. This is one of the strongest cases for a travel eSIM, which needs no CPF and works the moment you land.

Bottom line

Because local SIMs need a CPF that tourists rarely have, a travel eSIM is the clear choice for almost every visitor to Brazil.

Decision

Travel eSIM or local SIM?

Choose a travel eSIM

you want to land connected without the CPF requirement that complicates local SIMs, or you are touring multiple cities on one trip.

Consider a local SIM

you are staying long term, have a CPF, and want the lowest price per gigabyte from a local Vivo or Claro pack.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What can I use the Brazil mobile data tools for?

Use this page to compare the current price per GB, network indicator, transparency signal and local-operator reference for Brazil. It also links to a destination calculator and plan page.

How is the Brazil price per GB calculated?

It is the median price per GB of mid-tier plans in the live Brazil catalogue. Small 1 GB teasers and 50 GB or larger bulk plans are excluded so the figure reflects a typical traveller choice.

What network information is shown for Brazil?

The page shows the current 5G coverage indicator, a transparency score and the main local operator. These are destination-level signals, not a guarantee for every street or device.

Should I choose a travel eSIM or a local SIM in Brazil?

The decision section compares the practical trade-offs. A travel eSIM is usually simpler for a short visit; a local SIM can make sense when you need a local number, longer service or local pricing. Check the current conditions before deciding.
