Tigo offers the widest network with strong reach across the highlands.
Guatemala has dependable 4G across Guatemala City, Antigua, Lake Atitlan and the main tourist regions, with 5G only beginning to appear. Tigo and Claro carry the widest coverage, including most of the popular highland circuit. The realistic weak spots are the Peten jungle around Tikal, the remote highlands and the more isolated village roads, where signal thins between towns. For the main tourist routes, connectivity is reliable.
Typical local SIM: $8-18. Usually sold at Tigo and Claro stores, supermarkets and corner shops; airport counters at Guatemala City. Local SIMs are cheap and require a passport to register. A travel eSIM skips the in store step and works the moment you land, which suits a short highland trip. Tikal and remote jungle areas have little signal on any network.
For a short highland trip a travel eSIM is the easiest choice. For a long stay a local Tigo SIM is cheaper per gigabyte.

It is the median price per GB of mid-tier plans in the live Guatemala catalogue. Small 1 GB teasers and 50 GB or larger bulk plans are excluded so the figure reflects a typical traveller choice.
The page shows the current 5G coverage indicator, a transparency score and the main local operator. These are destination-level signals, not a guarantee for every street or device.
The decision section compares the practical trade-offs. A travel eSIM is usually simpler for a short visit; a local SIM can make sense when you need a local number, longer service or local pricing. Check the current conditions before deciding.
