Why the parks have no signal, by design

National parks frequently have little or no coverage, and this is partly deliberate. The parks limit tower construction to preserve the landscape and the sense of wilderness, so signal is often restricted to a developed visitor center or lodge area, with nothing on the trails or in the backcountry. The essential habit for any drive that leaves a metro area is to download the offline map for the region and screenshot any reservation, park entry or instruction you will need. US coverage is excellent often enough that the rare dead zone catches people off guard precisely because they stopped expecting it.
