Claro offers the widest network with the best national reach.
Nicaragua has workable 4G across Managua, Granada, Leon, San Juan del Sur and the main tourist towns, with limited 5G so far. Claro and Tigo carry the widest coverage, including the popular colonial cities and the Pacific surf coast. The realistic weak spots are the Caribbean coast, the remote Rio San Juan area, Ometepe's volcano slopes and the rural interior, where signal thins between towns. For the main tourist routes, connectivity is usable.
Typical local SIM: $8-18. Usually sold at Claro and Tigo stores, supermarkets and corner shops; airport counter at Managua. Local SIMs are cheap with passport registration. A travel eSIM skips the in store step and works the moment you land, which suits a short colonial cities and surf trip.
For a short trip a travel eSIM is the easiest choice. For a long stay a local Claro SIM is cheaper per gigabyte.

It is the median price per GB of mid-tier plans in the live Nicaragua catalogue. Small 1 GB teasers and 50 GB or larger bulk plans are excluded so the figure reflects a typical traveller choice.
The page shows the current 5G coverage indicator, a transparency score and the main local operator. These are destination-level signals, not a guarantee for every street or device.
The decision section compares the practical trade-offs. A travel eSIM is usually simpler for a short visit; a local SIM can make sense when you need a local number, longer service or local pricing. Check the current conditions before deciding.
