The park-and-desert rule

Treat every park visit and desert drive as offline by default. Download the offline map for the whole route and the park before you leave the last gateway town with signal, fill your fuel tank when you can rather than when you must, and screenshot your campsite reservation, park entry pass and any instructions. The gaps are predictable and harmless if you prepare, and stressful only if you assumed live navigation would always be there.

Offline navigation: the non-negotiable habit

The single most important road-trip skill in the US is downloading offline maps for your route before you set out. Both major map apps let you save a region for offline use, giving you turn-by-turn navigation with no signal at all, since your phone's GPS works independently of the mobile network. Which network for a road trip
